What Size Should a MacBook Wallpaper Be? Resolution Guide for Every Model
A wallpaper that is too small looks soft, and one with the wrong shape gets cropped. Here is the native screen resolution of current MacBook models, and what size of wallpaper to use so it looks sharp.
MacBook screen resolutions
| Model | Screen | Native resolution |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Neo 13″ (2026) | 13.0″ | 2408 × 1506 |
| MacBook Air 13″ (M2 – M5) | 13.6″ | 2560 × 1664 |
| MacBook Air 15″ (M2 – M5) | 15.3″ | 2880 × 1864 |
| MacBook Pro 14″ (M1 Pro – M5) | 14.2″ | 3024 × 1964 |
| MacBook Pro 16″ (M1 Pro – M5) | 16.2″ | 3456 × 2234 |
| Older MacBook Air 13″ (M1) and MacBook Pro 13″ | 13.3″ | 2560 × 1600 |
The short answer: 3840 × 2400 px
A 16:10 image at 3840 × 2400 pixels is larger than every MacBook screen in the table, so macOS only ever scales it down – which keeps brushstrokes and fine detail crisp. That is the size we use for most of our collections; each product page lists the exact file size.
Why the shape (aspect ratio) matters
Older MacBooks and the MacBook Neo are exactly 16:10, so a 16:10 wallpaper fits edge to edge. Models with a notch (MacBook Air from M2, MacBook Pro 14″ and 16″) are a little taller than 16:10. With the default “Fill Screen” setting, macOS trims a thin strip from the left and right – a few percent of the image – and the top centre sits behind the menu bar and notch. Paintings with the main subject in the middle, like most of ours, are not affected.
External monitors
Most 4K monitors are 16:9 (3840 × 2160). A 16:10 wallpaper still fills the screen; “Fill Screen” trims a little from the top and bottom instead.
